Redesign
Austin ISD started the Redesign process in May 2004 when they made LBJ a blueprint school. Since then, LBJ has been making changes to better serve the students. The redesign process intensified in the 2005-2006 school year. Below is a summary of events leading up to the implementation of First Things First.
September 2005 Mr. Patterson formed a committee of staff members to explore the kinds of restructuring plans that were being used throughout the United States.
Sept. 2005-April 2006 Committee members researched and visited schools in Nashville, New York, Houston, Kansas City, and Sacramento.
Sept. 2005-April 2006 Committee members read several books dealing with change in general and with change in education in particular.
April 2006 Committee agreed that the group that would be the best choice for LBJ is the IRRE group, which sponsors the First Things First initiative.
May 2006 IRRE began to lead us in the process to change LBJ to a school that is more responsive to its students while providing them with what they need to be successful after graduation.
June 2006-Dec. 2007 Planning for implementation of the First Things First initiative. Staff received training on what will be involved with this new program. Students and staff voted on their top three choices for the names of the Smaller Learning Communities.
January 2007 The three learning communities for LBJ are:
Performing and Visual Arts
Technology and Business
Health Sciences and Law
Staff selected which SLC they would like to be a part of.
February 26, 2007 The first Smaller Learning Community staff meetings.
