Girls lacrosse at LBJ is a club sport that began in 2002-03 with a junior varsity team. The Lady Jags are coached by Rich Weigand, the person largely responsible for bringing the game to Central Texas nearly two decades ago. Weigand, a senior manager at Spansion, coached boys lacrosse teams at Austin High for years before switching over to coaching the LBJ girls team that included his daughter Valerie, now one of two assistant coaches for the team.
Since 2003-04, the Lady Jags have fielded both varsity and Junior Varsity teams. Over the past several years, the Lady Jags have become a force in Central Texas, contributing players to both the regional and State All-Star teams. Last season, the Lady Jags had a 5-1 record in District play. The Lady Jags made it to the District Semi-finals by defeating St. Michael's Academy 15-4, where they lost 5-6 to the combined McNeil/Westwood team in a very close game. LBJ placed 8 players on the District All-star team and 5 on the State All-star team.
The Lady Jags are expected to be one of the strongest teams in the District again this year, having lost only 4 seniors at the end of last season. Fully 23 of last seasons players are returning: 11 are seniors, 8 are juniors, and 4 are sophomores. As of late September, 26 new players have signed up to play as well. The season officially begins in February 2007. Though the schedules won't be formalized for months, LBJ is expected to play against teams from McNeil, McCallum, Anderson, St. Michaels and Westwood.
